Addressing Current and Future Infrastructure Challenges and Opportunities
Speaker: Michael Skipper, AICP, Executive Director, Nashville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO)
Michael has more than 15 years of experience in metropolitan area policy and planning and social research, beginning his career with the Nashville Area MPO in the mid-1990s. Since his return to the MPO in 2007 as its executive director, Michael has authored state legislation and played a leading role in its passage to provide additional authority to Tennessee's large urban areas to address their transit needs. He has developed an award-winning staff and overseen the expansion of the MPO's scope to include increased integration of land use, urban design, environmental sustainability, and economic development issues in Middle Tennessee.
In addition to his MPO responsibilities, Michael serves as lead facilitator and advisor to the 10-county Middle Tennessee Mayors Caucus.
Prior to his work in Nashville, he directed the public transportation work program for an MPO in central Florida and served as a research consultant with firms in Austin, Texas and Seattle, Washington.
He received his undergraduate degree in Geography from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, and a Masters of Science in Community and Regional Planning from the University of Texas at Austin. Recent honors include Tennessee Planner of the Year by the Tennessee Chapter of the American Planning Association, the National Award for Outstanding Individual Leadership by the Association of MPOs, and the Transportation Planning Excellence Award by the APA and United States Department of Transportation.
