"19th Century Women: When the Going Gets Tough..."
Featured Speaker: Margie Thessin, Founder, Franklin on Foot
Margie Thessin is the founder of Franklin on Foot, a company that offers guided walking tours of historic Franklin.
Margie, a native of Vero Beach, Florida, earned a B.A. in history from the University of Florida. She graduated from law school at Catholic University and practiced law in West Virginia. A job opportunity for her husband Mark led the family to Franklin in 1988.
After several years as a stay-at-home mom, Margie began to volunteer, leading walking tours for Franklin's Heritage Foundation classroom program. In 1998, she was named the Heritage Foundation classroom teacher, and in 2003 she co-founded Franklin on Foot. She later spent three years as director of group tours, special events and weddings and bookstore manager at Historic Carnton Plantation, and in 2008-09, served as Carnton's interim executive director. Margie is the author of Ghosts of Franklin, Tennessee's Most Haunted Town and Lizzie's War, a historical novel for children set in Franklin during the Civil War. She also served for 10 years on the Franklin Battlefield Commission.
Over the years, Margie has expanded Franklin on Foot beyond its initial offering of one historic walking tour, adding ghost, crime, Civil War, cemetery, and the I Spy children's program. She also founded Franklin Tours and Rentals and Franklin Southern Style Food tours.
