Center for Nonprofit Management CEO Roundtable

Hosted by:

Center for Nonprofit Management and Williamson, Inc.

Topic: Effective Board Management and Development Practices

Speaker:

Jim Vaillancourt, Ph.D

Senior Consultant
Center for Nonprofit Management

James R. Vaillancourt, Ph.D., Senior Consultant and former Executive Director of the Center for Nonprofit Management, has been a teacher, university administrator, consultant and a small business partner. He joined CNM in 1992 as Associate Executive Director and became CEO in 1997, having responsibility for leading the Center's efforts to provide quality, affordable management assistance to nonprofit organizations through training, consulting, and evaluation on a wide range of management issues. His experience in organization development and management and his facilitator skills has served CNM clients well.

Born in Albany, NY, Jim finished growing up in Buffalo and earned his three degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo (UB). After a brief stint teaching high school, he worked at UB and the SUNY College at Geneseo. Subsequently, he moved to Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA serving as Dean of Enrollment Services and Associate Professor in the School of Education. It was then off to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County as Assistant Provost. The various academic support units he oversaw during his academic career included admission,s financial aid, graduate school, freshman orientation, student counseling, academic retention, registrar, and adult and noncredit studies. He has taught at the high school, undergraduate and graduate levels.

Dr. Vaillancourt has been a consultant to several colleges and universities around the country and numerous nonprofit organizations in the mid-south and beyond a variety of management issues. Over the years, he has led seminars and workshops, delivered keynote addresses, presented papers and served on panels covering a wide variety of topics. His current consulting emphases are strategic alliances, strategic planning and board development. Jim leads CNM workshops on board development, and nonprofit management and has been working this year with an umber of organizations on merger, planning and board development.

He enjoyed being an adjunct professor in The Owen School of Graduate Management at Vanderbilt University and currently teaches in the College of Business MBA program at Lipscomb University. Him has served on a number of boards as member and officer, among them board treasurer of the Alliance for Nonprofit Management, an international association of individuals and organizations that strengthen nonprofits and more recently chaired the Williamson County Library board in Franklin.

Jim and his wife Mary Jo have lived in Franklin since moving to Middle Tennessee in 1990. This afforded her the opportunity to start and subsequently sell a successful retail business and him a chance to learn that raising cattle is a carefree hobby when someone else does it. Their children are scattered from San Diego to Buffalo. The Vaillancourts enjoy traveling and an occasional sail in their free time.
